Grants & Funding: Professional Students

Am I eligible for funding?money If you are a professional degree student, you may apply for the funding opportunities on this page. If you are a Ph.D., A.M., or M.S. degree candidate, you are considered a research degree student by the University fand will need to apply for funding through the Research Student Council. Some examples of professional degrees include MSEd, EdD, MBA, MSN, MB, MSE, MD, JD, DMD, etc.

Please note that you are only eligible to receive one GAPSA-administered award per academic semester. Other restrictions may apply.

Travel: Professional Student Travel Grant
Purpose To defray the cost of qualified travel expenses for Penn professional students attending and/or presenting at academic conferences, meetings and case competitions 
Funding
  • Individuals attending only: max. 50% of total cost or $300, whichever is less
  • Individuals presenting: max. 50% of the total cost or $500 if presenting, whichever is less
  • Part-time students: max. 50% of total cost or $150, whichever is less
  • Groups of 5 or more: max. 50% of total cost, $2,000/group, or the above stipulations per individual, whichever is less
Notes
  • The applicant must be a full-time or part-time Penn professional student at the time of the conference.
  • If the applicant is already receiving two or more forms of funding, they are ineligible for a travel grant.
  • Meal expenses are not eligible for reimbursement.
Deadline Applications are due no later than two (2) weeks prior to the start of the conference.

Our funds are nearly depleted for the 2012-2013 academic year. If you are submitting for travel taking place before May 1, 2013, it is unlikely that you will receive reimbursement; however, there is no harm in applying just in case. If you are traveling on or after May 1, 2013, your application will be considered under next year's budget.

Travel: President Gutmann Leadership Award
Purpose President Amy Gutmann, using the proceeds of her 2009 Carnegie Corporation Academic Leadership Award, has generously provided additional funding to GAPSA to augment GAPSA’s funding for graduate and professional student travel. The award will be given to students presenting at either an international conference, or a conference within the United States that would normally be out of their budget even with an individual travel grant through the Research or Professional Student Councils.
Funding Max. 50% of the total cost or $2000, whichever is less
Notes
  • The applicant must be a full-time or part-time Penn professional or research student.
  • The applicant must be presenting at the conference.
  • Meal expenses are not eligible for reimbursement.
Deadline Fall 2012 Conference (September-December): September 28, 2012
Spring 2013 Conference (January-April): January 25, 2013
Summer 2013 Conference (May-August): May 24, 2013

Research: GAPSA-Provost Fellowship for Interdisciplinary Innovation
Purpose A program jointly funded by the Office of the Provost and GAPSA for the expressed purpose of fostering an interdisciplinary graduate and professional environment at the University of the Pennsylvania. The fellowship strives to promote original, student-derived initiatives that integrate knowledge across diverse academic disciplines. The fellowship is also meant to support the project-leader/s develop, pursue and complete their proposed interdisciplinary initiatives.
Funding $6,000.00 summer fellowship per project
Notes
  • The applicant must be a full-time or part-time Penn professional or research student.
  • The research project must be completed in the summer of application.

Deadline March 29, 2013 Extended to April 5, 2013 on account of Easter and Passover
Application Students may apply for this award by submitting via email a proposal for a summer research project that clearly intends to integrate knowledge across academic disciplines.

Research: Professional Student Research Grant
Purpose - To assist in funding research undertaken by Professional Students at the University of Pennsylvania

To partially or fully fund pilot research projects that may lead to full-scale projects
Funding $500
Notes

- Applicants must be part-time or full-time professional students during the period of research. Exceptions will be made for groups that are majority professional students.
- Applicants that receive an award will be required to present research outcomes for short-term projects, or updates for long-term projects within three months of beginning the research.
- If the applicant is already receiving two or more sources of funding, he/she is ineligible for a research grant.
- A separate recommendation is required and is to be submitted online via the link below.

General: GAPSA General Assembly Discretionary Fund
Purpose

Each year, the GAPSA General Assembly utilizes a $25,000 discretionary fund to support academic and social enterprises that will benefit Penn’s entire graduate student population. This falls in line with part of GAPSA´s mission to encourage students from all corners of the student body to get together, learn together, and have fun together.
